Pianist Greg Murphy is an adept post-bop jazz improviser, known for his solo work and long association with drummer Rashied Ali. Murphy emerged in Chicago and spent time in New Orleans, before settling in NYC in the late-'80s. He worked closely with Ali until the drummer's death in 2009. Murphy has also released his own albums, including 2014's Blues for Miles, 2019's Bright Idea with Jeff "Tain" Watts and Eric Wheeler, and 2024's You Remind Me. A native of Chicago, IL, Murphy started on piano at a young age. He played music in school and studied privately with Lucia Santini at Chicago's Roosevelt University. After high school, he attended DePaul University, as well as the University of Illinois where he played in the UIC Big Band. During this time, he also played in the local jazz and funk outfit Lightning Flash Thunder Roar. In 1984, he earned a jazz study grant from the National Endowment for the Arts which afforded him the chance to study in New Orleans with esteemed jazz pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis. While living in New Orleans, he led his own groups and played with various ensembles, as well as with luminaries like Wynton Marsalis and Donald Harrison. Over the course of his career, Greg has shared the stage or studio with an extraordinary roster of musicians, including Arthur Taylor, George Coleman, Grachan Moncur III, Christian McBride, Cindy Blackman, Flava Flav, Isaiah Collier, Lakecia Benjamin, Josh Evans, Eric Wyatt, George Coleman Jr., T.K. Blue, Ray Blue, Linley Hamilton, Piotr Wojtasik, Billy Harper, Rudy Walker, Billy Hart, Joe Lovano, Charles McPherson, Larry Ridley, William Parker, and Charles Gayle, among many others.
